"Buddhist Women as Spiritual Leaders" by Lai Suat Yan

Women's Studies in Religion Presents "Buddhist Women as Spiritual Leaders, Ritual Specialists and Religious Innovators: Case Studies from Thailand and Indonesia," presented by Dr. Lai Suat Yan, University of Malaya

Located at the intersection of religious studies, women’s studies and postcolonial scholarship, this presentation illustrates Asian women as change agents in their society. Dr. Yan, an Asian Public Intellectual Fellow, will discuss the changing identity and roles of Theravada Buddhist women from followers and supporters to spiritual leaders, ritual specialists and religious innovators in the context of Thailand and Indonesia. These Buddhist women’s achievements are particularly remarkable given their marginalization in the ecclesiastical authority of their religious ‘tradition’.
